The Schisms are an Austin, Texas 3-piece psych-goth band that sound like a cross between The Damned and Arctic Monkeys. Led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Carson Barker, The Schisms recently recorded an EP with Grammy award-winning producer Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Lorreta Lynn), called “Tejas”. The album features 2 singles, “I Learn To Love” and “All The Good Things” with the former featuring a video made with local Austin film crew Three-Eyed Cat Collective.

Their last album, Moon, was recorded by Sikes, received rave reviews across local and national media sites. Their video “Don’t Clip My Wings“  was premiered by The Austin Chronicle, and nominated for Best Video by the Austin Short Fest.

This year The Schisms received the official City of Austin Live Music Fund which partially funded the album.  The Schisms live show is like a bolt of lightning that gets the crowd moving.

LOCAL LEGEND DON WAYNE: “One of his first successes as a songwriter was “The Lonesome Waltz”, co-written with Vic McAlpin and recorded by George Morgan in 1953. In 1958 Wayne recorded “Head Over Heels In Love” for the Swan label, followed the next year by “Poor Little Jimmy” for Look Records, which, though not a hit, was later recorded by both Hank Snow and Burl Ives.

His biggest successes as a songwriter included “Walk Tall”, recorded by Faron Young and a big UK hit for Irish singer Val Doonican in 1964; “Saginaw, Michigan”, recorded by Lefty Frizzell; “Belles of Southern Bell”, a hit for Del Reeves; “If Teardrops Were Silver”, recorded by Jean Shepard; and, his biggest hit, “Country Bumpkin”, a #1 hit on the Country chart in 1974 for Cal Smith. Smith also had hits with several more of Wayne’s songs including “It’s Time to Pay the Fiddler”, “She Talked A Lot About Texas”, and “Woman, Don’t Try To Sing My Song.”

VIDEO AGE: Video Age make breezy and timeless songs that are so ineffable, they can only be the result of a decades-long friendship and songwriting partnership. Across four albums, Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli have gleefully worn their influences on their sleeve, writing inviting tunes that reference sounds ranging from disco to pop and indie rock. On their latest LP, Away From The Castle, the New Orleans duo have strayed from nostalgia and instead have honed their own unique musicality, making songs that sound like themselves with a taste of inspiration from classic singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s. The album is a testament to the possibilities that come from getting out of your comfort zone, the freedom of writing vulnerably and unselfconsciously, and the joys of getting to work with your closest companions.

RUI GABRIEL'S journey to become one of indie rock's most vibrant and perceptive voices is certainly unconventional. Born in Venezuela and raised in Nicaragua, the now-Indiana-based songwriter spent his 20s in New Orleans and playing in beloved bands like Lawn, where he's a co-songwriter and co-lead singer with Mac Folger. While that band finds the sweet spot between sing-a-long power pop and bracing post-punk, Gabriel's solo debut Compassion uses a lighter palate that combines ethereal pop with '80s synth textures, and slacker-rock charm. The LP is a testament to growing up and Gabriel's disarming lyrical sensibility.
