007

007 has been rocking steady in New Orleans since 2000. The brainchild of G Love and
Special Sauce drummer Jeffrey "Houseman" Clemens, 007 is a forum for playing great
Jamaican music from the 60's by such artists as Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and
Toots Hibbert (Toots and the Maytals). 007's members also play in some of the area's
best bands. Bassist Joe Cabral fronts The Iguanas on Bajo Sexto and tenor saxophone.
Composer and guitarist Jonathan Freilich founded the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars
and plays guitar in many styles from jazz to folk. Alex McMurray plays guitar and sings
with Tin Men and the Happy Talk Band. Infectious dance grooves combined with three
part harmony singing and brilliant guitar improvisation are the hallmarks of this New
Orleans Party Institution. They have released three records, most recently “The Return
Of Ben Downlow” in 2024.

CORPUS OFFAL with MEPHITIC CORPSE and PENETRATION

HOLY HELL at HOLY DIVER!! CORPUS OFFAL with MEPHITIC CORPSE and PENETRATION

Doors at 8PM/21+ @holydiverneworleans

Cerebral Rot is DEAD. From its maggot-infested corpse an entity even more repulsively loathsome has emerged, CORPUS OFFAL. Cerebral Rot’s lead guitarist / vocalist Ian Schwab, and guitarist Clyle Lindstrom have reconstituted in this ghastly operating theater, now with the new rhythm section (de)composed of Jesse Shreibman (Bell Witch, Autophagy) on drums and Jason Sachs (ex-Demoncy) on bass.

With the Cerebral Rot songwriting core intact CORPUS OFFAL reeks of similarly foul decrepitude and bludgeoning subterranean weight. Additionally a new more sickly goregrind presence hovers over the murk like a horrid miasma, engulfing the tunes with a cadaverous redolence.

The upcoming album, which has been recorded and mixed by Billy Anderson and mastered by Dan Lowndes, will be released in 2025.

ZORN / SATANIK HEAVY DRINKER / RADE

This will be a ripper! Doors at 8PM / $15 at the door / 21+

While Zorn’s theatrical, (literally) scorching live shows are the stuff of legend, it would be a grave mistake to think the chaos they summon is all about the flaming swords, makeup, and leather corsets. Like Alice Cooper and David Bowie before them, Zorn knows you gotta have the songs to back up the image. Zorn’s metal-punk draws on death rock melody, intricate thrash riffing, and the bulldozing power of Discharge-inspired hardcore bands, but the songs are as infectious as they are intense. As with early Metallica, tracks like “Already Dead” and “Delco Devil Mosh” are built on memorable melodies that, in another time and place, might have formed the backbone of a killer glam rock single. I’m happy with my current reality, though, where Zorn is the kind of band who puts a devil standing atop a pile of flaming skulls on the cover of their album.

MICHAEL HURTT AND THE NEW ORLEANS NIGHT HOWLERS W/LORETTE VELVETTE & ROCKIN' DON WAYNE

LUNDI GRAS at HOLY DIVER!! 🎡 This is gonna be a good one!! 🎉 LORETTE VELVETTE with MICHAEL HURTT AND THE NEW ORLEANS NIGHT HOWLERS, ROCKIN' DON WAYNE and special guest DJ MATTY! Doors at 8PM / $15 / 21+ @holydiverneworleans

Until this past October, Lorette Velvette had not played in New Orleans since the late eighties when her mesmerizing Memphis rock 'n' roll band the Hellcats scorched the city with a still-talked about appearance with Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Since then, she's become an otherworldy chanteuse of Southern song, her deeply Delta-inflected style ignited by trailblazers like hill country blues guitarist Jessie Mae Hemphill and Moon Records' rockabilly maven Cordell Jackson. Like a 21st Century Bobbie Gentry, her music is rooted in the vaguely familiar, yet defies simple categorization, with myriads of blues, country and gospel tributaries running through its strikingly soulful rock 'n' roll spirit. Be sure to burn this upcoming Lundi Gras appearance into your brains and calendars!!

SYSTEM EXCLUSIVE with NITE NURSE, SELMA OXOR and special guest DJ DRUGSTOREELVIS

FOLLOWING THE MUSES PARADE /10PM/ $8 ADV 21+

Ari Blaisdell and Matt Jones are System Exclusive: a Pasadena based two piece band bearing an armful of mini synths, making heart-throbbing capital P pop cut with more than a hint of post-punk. Blaisdell’s vocals hearken back to openhearted 80’s hitmakers unafraid to quaver in the name of love, and they’re buoyed by Jones’ laser-gridded synth concoctions and heavy hand on the ones and twos.

Nite Nurse is a quartet of New Orleans rock n roll malcontents, including members of Il Gruppo Fr and Luxurious Faux Furs. They have problems, and they have songs about problems.

9pm / $10

“I WANT TO PLAY THE PIANO THE WAY LINK WRAY PLAYS THE GUITAR"

Spinning tall tales of folklore, myth, urban legend and conspiracy theory through the kaleidoscope eye of soul, rock & roll and pre-war r&B, Harvey McLaughlin’s piano playing (and guitar slinging) antics have been ever present in the San Antonio music scene for the better part of the last twenty years. Be it in the dark instrumental horror surf outfit, the Sandworms (2008-2015); the jump blues psychobilly extravaganza of the Hares (2012-2016); or, more recently, joining the legendary Austin/SA cowpunk ensemble, the Hickoids – McLaughlin’s raucous style and swagger spreads wide.

His two full length albums, Tabloid News (2018) and Rascality (2020), are available via Saustex Records.

He’s currently playing in the aforementioned Hickoids, as well as keyboards for the Chicano soul revival, Eddie & the Valiants.

NORCO LAPALCO with CHEF MENTEUR and SUNRISE:SUNSET

Back in the day audiences and listeners were enthralled and informed by the caustic lyrical and guitar stylings of one Mr. Lou Thevenot, with his commentary on the unique and mindless aspects of life in the seven parish area as the bands Lump and Black Problem lurched and stomped behind him.

Since then there’s been very little until recent days, when his new outfit Norco Lapalco started to play out and provide another band to his singular approach. Now the group has a record, and it’s chock-full of loud, in-your-face music to accompany Thevenot’s ideas.

The songs are abrasive at times with noisy passages that have a great metallic distortion in the way that Sonic Youth made famous. But they also have an angular structure that can change dynamics and tone without losing momentum, like the best work of the Minutemen.

The songs feature both Thevenot and ball-of-energy vocalist Alba Houston, who can shred and coo with the best of them. Most of the tracks deal with the vagaries and truths of life in New Orleans and its surrounding towns. Some, like the takedown of the New Orleans Police on “One Shoe,” are sarcastic and self-righteous. Other tracks—like instant classics “You, Me, and Huey P.” and “Power Blvd.”—are laugh-out-loud funny amid the spiky, tight guitar and drums.

With the music and message exhibited here, Norco Lapalco is not only a great addition to the local music scene, but a fantastic perspective for our civic dialogue. (Kunian, David. Offbeat Magazine. 12 Dec. 2012. https://www.offbeat.com/music/norco-lapalco-independent/ Accessed 29 Nov. 2024.)

NEST with GNASHING and INNER ANGUISH

Vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer John Jarvis has constructed a repository for extreme sounds and emotions in Nest. On one end of the spectrum, his grating riffs played with icy industrial precision and hardcore grit will leave you bloody, bruised, and breathless. On the other, his shoegaze hum bellows in a strangely soothing trance, bordering on blissful in the face of raw destruction.

In 2024, this vision takes shape like never before on Nest’s fourth full-length LP and Housecore Records debut, Endeavors.

“There are gorgeous nests, and then there are hideous and gross things like rats’ nests,” he notes. “I wanted to make music with beauty in it, but also some ugliness and darkness. A lot can happen in between.”

WET SPECIMENS w/PAPRIKA, AMERICAN CULTURE & D.SABLU

WET SPECIMENS are hardcore punk from albany, NY

"Though Wet Specimens is definitely a hardcore band, I also hear elements of post-punk and the ultra lo-fi recording lends the material a creeped-out vibe. "Our sound is the product of our different influences. Dan, Colin, and Dylan all grew up in the Albany area and listen to a lot of Japanese hardcore, D-beat, and UK82 bands. I came from California and have more of a background in American hardcore, death rock, and new wave music. We try to pull from our favorite parts of what we listen to and then just put it through blown out distortion and reverb. Nobody’s reinventing the wheel in 2018, we’re just trying to see how far we can make the wheel roll with a tire with no tread and a nail in it." Ramirez, C. ( 2018, September 20).
